OPINION: Get integrated in the community [Kerrville Daily Times, Texas :: ](Kerrville Daily Times (TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 09--This year marks the 30th anniversary of a program that has shaped our community by raising up many of the area's most active and influential leaders. Since its inception, the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Kerr County program has annually served as a boot camp for getting acquainted with the workings of Kerr County and preparing participants to serve in leadership roles and do business in the area. At The Kerrville Daily Times, we have had numerous employees participate in the program, including our publisher (Class No. 26), business manager (Class No. 23) and myself (Class No. 28), among others. Leadership Kerr County is a program we strongly support, because it shares many of the values that are important to a community newspaper, including civic awareness and education, community involvement and relationship building. The nine-month leadership curriculum includes day-long sessions on local government, economic development, social services, health care, environmental issues and more. Each year, class participants also participate in a community improvement project and have an opportunity to meet and visit with local government officials and state legislators. The Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce currently is reviewing nominations and applications for its 2014-15 class that begins in September. The steering committee involved with putting together the curriculum also is interested in hearing from local professionals and organizations who work in the various areas of training.
