BRIEF: Penn State sports: Athletics Department weighs in on NCAA autonomy ruling [Centre Daily Times (State College, Pa.) :: ]

(Centre Daily Times (State College, PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 09--Penn State's athletic department released a statement on the NCAA vote that will grant the Power Five conferences -- including the Big Ten -- autonomy to create many of their own rules.

The NCAA board of directors voted 16-2 to allow collegiate athletics' most powerful conferences to determine their own stipulations on stipends and financial aid packages, insurance benefits for players, nutritional rules and recruiting rules among others.

"We at Penn State fully support the governance structure and autonomy provisions passed this week by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors," Penn State's athletic department said in a release. "At the core of the decision is the ability to provide optimal care and enhanced opportunities for student-athlete success in the classroom and on the field of play. Anything that puts students first is to be applauded. Like many things in college athletics, there will be costs associated with change. It will require that we exhibit extreme discipline and establish a prioritization based on our values. All of this will be healthy for the enterprise, both at Penn State and nationally, and good for our student-athletes." ___ (c)2014 the Centre Daily Times (State College, Pa.)
