EDITORIAL: Marketing Stillwater is a wise decision [Stillwater NewsPress, Okla. :: ]

(Stillwater NewsPress (OK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 07--STILLWATER, Okla. -- Visit Stillwater works with approximately 300 groups annually to bring events to Stillwater. Events range from athletic events to corporate training to reunions.

Athletic events extend beyond Oklahoma State University sports. Stillwater has played host to state football championship games at Boone Pickens Stadium and Stillwater High School's Pioneer Stadium in recent years.

Visit Stillwater officials market Stillwater outside the community to increase the number of visitors coming to Stillwater, which helps keep restaurants, retailers and the hospitality industry profitable.

Visit Stillwater helps keep Stillwater's economy growing, and is funded through the city's hotel/motel tax. The tax, which is earmarked for tourism development only, flows into the city treasurer and city government funds the Visit Stillwater budget.

A sticking point this fiscal year, which began July 1, was the city's appropriation. It was $500,000, approximately $140,000 less than needed.

Earlier this week, the city added $140,000 to Visit Stillwater's budget. Visit Stillwater officials will use the money to purchase specialized software that will merge 11 databases into one database that everyone in the Visit Stillwater office can use. It will make Visit Stillwater operate more efficiently.

City officials listened to Visit Stillwater officials and amended the organization's budget. It was a prudent decision.
