Mix Presents Groundbreaking "Sound for Film" Event on Immersive Sound

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 08/05/14 -- Mix, in conjunction with host sponsor Sony Pictures Studios, is launching a special one-day event for the motion picture sound industry, "Sound for Film: Immersive Sound -- From Production to Playback," to be held September 6, 2014, on the Sony Pictures Entertainment studio lot in Culver City, Calif. Mix is owned by NewBay Media, the world's largest publisher of AV/Pro Audio resources and news.

The event, presented in conjunction with Event Partners the Motion Picture Sound Editor's Guild (MPSE) and the Cinema Audio Society (CAS), encompasses a full day of programming, including panels on the technology, business, and creative aspects of immersive sound; technology workshops sponsored by leading manufacturers in state-of-the-art theaters; a series of film reel playback demonstrations in Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D, and DTS MDA interop file format; and an end-of-day, sneak-preview exclusive screening of an upcoming Sony Pictures film, mixed for Atmos release and played back in the William Holden Theatre.

"We're thrilled to be partnering with Sony Post Production Services, one of the world's leading facilities, for this event," says Mix editor Tom Kenny. "There have been quite a few major technology advances in editing and mixing since the early 1990s, when digital took hold and 5.1 discrete playback became the norm. But the recent leap forward in surround sound is something new and big -- for the creatives, for the technology companies, and for the audience. Immersive sound is changing the movie-going experience, and it's just getting started. There has been a great deal of emphasis placed on 3D visuals in theaters. Now it's sound's turn." "Sony Pictures Post Production Services is proud to be a part of this incredible event with Mix. It will bring together professionals from many disciplines to discuss the importance of sound, immersive sound formats, new technologies and workflows that support the creation of soundtracks that are vital to the work of filmmakers and the enjoyment of audiences," says Tom McCarthy, Executive Vice President, Sony Pictures Post Production Services. "Sound has always been an integral part of the storytelling process in film. Sound is to acting and dialogue what a picture frame is to a great work of art.

"The development of new, immersive sound formats has created additional opportunities for filmmakers and sound professionals to add layers to their storytelling, resulting in what might be called a 'virtual reality audio experience.' Today, soundtracks envelop their audiences in sound, music, and atmospheres, making them feel as though they are actually a part of the movie. New sound technologies are enhancing the movie-going experience for people around the globe," adds McCarthy.

"We are privileged to be partnering with such well-respected industry leaders as Sony Pictures Studios, the MPSE and the CAS, who have all been instrumental in helping us to spotlight this innovative and unprecedented event," adds Charlie Weiss, Group Publisher of Mix and NewBay's AV/Pro Audio franchise. "By working together, we are bringing the highest level of creative and technical minds in sound for film, from all major studios and technology providers." Sponsors at press time include Auro Technologies, Yamaha, DTS, Dolby, Meyer Sound, GC Pro, and Harrison Consoles. Panelists, keynote speaker and final program information will be announced in early August.
