Abdul Basit DOHA: After the successful week-long 'Eid in Qatar' festival yesterday, Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) opens 'Qatar Summer Festival' today with unique entertainment activities at locations across the country.

"We welcome all citizens, residents, and visitors from the region to Qatar Summer Festival 2014 to enjoy dozens of wonderful entertainment activities, games, and festivities QTA and its partners will offer over almost two months," said Rashed Al Qurese, Director, Marketing and Promotions, QTA.  Running for seven weeks, the festival seeks to encourage family tourism and promote Qatar as a unique family holiday destination.  "This is part of our efforts to activate tourism offerings and products across Qatar. QTA seeks to increase hotel occupancy rate during the summer season. Activities will take place in Doha, Al Wakra and Al Khor," added Al Qurese.

One of the highlights of the festival is Family Fun, an integrated entertainment city with games and rides at Doha Exhibition Center (DEC). It is open from Sunday to Thursday (3pm to 11pm) and on Fridays and Saturdays (2pm to  midnight). Free shuttle service is provided from Q-Post office to DEC from 3pm to 10pm during weekdays and 2pm to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Spectacular dancing fountain shows will also start tonight at Fountain Fun on the Corniche across from Al Murjan Restaurant. The shows are scheduled every evening. Seven to 10-minute shows with 30-minute intervals are presented from Sunday to Thursday from 6pm to 11pm while on Fridays and Saturdays from 7pm to midnight with 45-minute interval.

There is also 'Adventure Fun' in Al Khor where visitors can enjoy outdoor activities such as bike riding, kayaking and other games. Tickets can be purchased from the tent outside Al Khor Mall. These activities are held from 1pm until 6pm daily.

Families can enjoy 'Flash Fun', an inflatable Aqua Park on Wakrah beach, from 3pm to 8pm daily.

QTA is also organising Shopping Fun activity from August 17 to September 13 at The Pearl Qatar, The Mall, City Center, Hyatt Plaza and Al Khor Mall where shoppers can enjoy special discounts and raffle draws offering prizes worth QR2.5m,  including eight Audi cars. Capping the festival is a Disney On Ice show at Qatar National Convention Center from September 24 to 27.

QTA expects a large number of visitors in light of the promotional campaign it launched in the GCC. Various media were used in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and the UAE to promote the festival.

"The festival follows the greatly successful Eid Al Fitr festival, results of which will be published in a few days. The summer festival is also part of QTA's endeavours to activate National Tourism Sector 2030 Strategy it launched in February to serve as the road map for the development of the tourism industry and guide QTA in its efforts to promote Qatar as an international tourism destination with deep cultural roots," said Al Qurese.
