Samsung confirms Durban factory plans [ITWeb]

(ITWeb Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Samsung says its TV manufacturing plant will provide jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers.

Samsung Electronics SA has confirmed plans to open a television manufacturing plant at Durban-based trade and logistics zone Dube Tradeport in a $20 million (R212 million) investment until 2018.

According to Matthew Thackrah, deputy MD of Samsung Electronics SA, the move came about following collaboration between the company and South African national and provincial authorities.

"The establishment of new plant is another step in our goal to create new business opportunities, products and technology," he says.

After "thorough feasibility studies", Samsung says it was able to expedite progress on the project which promises socio-economic benefits to the KwaZulu-Natal province and residents.

The company says its manufacturing plant will provide job opportunities and encourage the development of skilled and unskilled labour in the region.

The Dube Tradeport precinct is based at Durban's King Shaka International Airport, and has been designated as a special economic zone.

Numerous initiatives at the facility are spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry.

Samsung's announcement follows months of speculation that a new factory was imminent.
