Construction Firm Basil Read Appoints New CEO [Ventures Africa]

(Ventures Africa Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) VENTURES AFRICA – JSE-listed construction firm, Basil Read, on Monday said it had appointed Neville Nicolau as its new CEO with effect from September this year.

Nicolau replaces Marius Heyns who resigned in March this year because he wanted to go and "reflect." Basil Read said Nicolau brought with him 35 years of operating, company leadership and corporate experience.

Nicolau is the former CEO of Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), the world's biggest platinum miner domiciled in South Africa.

Amplats was heavily battered by the wage strike in its Rustenburg mines which lasted five months, starting in late January and ended in June.

As a consequence of this, parent company, Anglo American (Anglo) last week said it wanted to dispose of Amplats as its subsidiary.

Nicolau is also the former COO and executive director of AngloGold Ashanti, the JSE-listed gold producer.

Nicolau holds an MBA from the University of Cape Town, a B Tech Degree in Mining Engineering, from the University of Johannesburg.

He completed a Management Development Programme (MDP) at Unisa, School of Business Leadership and has a Certificate in Advanced Management Programme (AMP) from Templeton College, Oxford.

Lester Peteni, the chairman of the board of Basil Read, described Nicolau as a seasoned executive.

"The Board looks forward to working with Neville to inject new energy into our efforts, as we continually improve business performance and the strategic transformation of the company," Peteni said.
