Digicel to enter fixed market with Telstar takeover [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Digicel, Jamaica's largest cellco by subscribers, has signed an agreement to acquire Kingston-based cable TV, broadband and voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) provider Telstar for an undisclosed sum, the Jamaica Observer reports. The deal is subject to approval from the Broadcasting Commission and is part of a wider strategy to expand Digicel's presence in the broadband market in the region. Commenting on the planned takeover, and the company's broader goals, Digicel Group CEO Colm Delves explained: 'We are investing heavily in cable TV, content and fibre across our markets to ensure that Digicel is positioned at the forefront of a data-intensive world. We look forward to expanding our footprint further in the space in the coming year through a combination of acquisitions and greenfield builds.' *To ensure that the cableco changes hands smoothly Telstar's management team will work together with Digicel in the short term, Telstar's managing director Flo Darby noted, adding that customers could expect a 'wave of innovation' in products after the takeover.
