Omnitel boosts 4G coverage to 65% [TeleGeography CommsUpdate](TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Omnitel, Lithuania's largest mobile operator by subscribers, has expanded the coverage of its 4G LTE network to 65% of the population. The TeliaSonera-owned company launched commercial LTE mobile broadband services in the downtown areas of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Siauliai and Panevezys in April 2011, notes TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database. Since then, the network has been expanded to around 50 of the country's largest towns and cities, including Palanga, Nida, Svencionys, Moletu, Jonava, Sirvintos, Silale, Kryzioku, Jurbarke, Taurageje, Sakiuose, Alytus, Birstonas, Druskininkai, Varena, Marijampole, Simnas, Kalvarija, Lazdijai, Salcininkai and Pilviskiuose. Earlier this month, new LTE base stations were installed in a number of additional locations, including Birzai, Utena, Anyksciai, Trakai, Rokiskis, Linkuva, Jiezne and Traku Voke. *Omnitel recently completed the upgrade of its wireless network under an extensive modernisation project that began in 2011. The project saw all existing 2G and 3G base stations upgraded and an additional 686 new 3G cell sites installed, boosting data coverage to 99.9% of the country.
