Chief Minister welcomes Manx Telecom investment in cyber attack prevention

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 09 July 2014 Release date- 03072014 - Chief Minister Hon Allan Bell MHK said Manx Telecom's new cyber attack prevention solution will enhance the Isle of Man's status as a responsible jurisdiction in the digital community.

The Chief Minister was speaking at a launch event for DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) Protection which was attended by a broad spectrum of the company's clients. He also praised the company's continued commitment to introducing new technology which was helping to support the Government's drive for growth in the e-Business sector.

Mike Dee, Manx Telecom CEO, welcomed the Chief Minister and guests to the event at the Claremont Hotel, Douglas and said that DDoS Protection was the result of a six-figure investment to deliver a world class and cost-effective cyber security solution; a decision that complements Manx Telecom's position as the leading bandwidth and hosting provider on the Island, with the largest resource of security trained technicians. The platform is powered by Radware - a global leader of application delivery and application security with customers such as large online commerce and social networking sites. Manx Telecom believes it is currently the only Isle of Man provider which can offer this level of cyber security protection to its corporate connectivity and hosting customers as a fully managed service.

Speaking at the launch event, Adrian Crawley, Radware Regional Sales Director for the UK and Ireland, explained the rapid rise in the volume of cyber attacks in recent years which has resulted in 90% of businesses now being affected by DDoS attacks at some level. He also detailed some high-profile examples which illustrate the increasing sophistication of hackers - such as the recent Anonymous 'hacktivist' group on the websites of some of the global brands which sponsor the FIFA World Cup. This example of a threat to some of the world's biggest companies, he said, showed the scale and complexity of the security challenge facing businesses, especially those with a significant online presence. He also illustrated the insidious effects of cyber attacks, because in the majority of cases these caused a degradation of service rather than causing a company's website to crash. But a degradation of service can still mean a retailer losing thousands of customers or revenue due to its website failing to operate as quickly and efficiently as normal.

All of this emphasises the importance of Isle of Man businesses using the latest cyber security solutions such as DDoS Protection. It is estimated that DDoS attacks cost the global economy GBP238 billion a year with more than 7,000 such attacks occurring daily around the world - a number that has grown rapidly in recent years. Malicious users are often able to steal information or halt normal computer operation, with motives ranging from industrial espionage and revenge to financial gain and political aims. When an attack is carried out using more than one machine it is called a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, and it poses a serious threat for all businesses - especially those which rely on the internet.
