Mobile phone sales rise 10% in Q1 2014 - GfK [IntelliNews - Weekly Reports]

(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sales of mobile phones in the Czech Republic reached 630,000 units in the first quarter of 2014, registering an annual rise of 10%, CTK newswire reported citing data from research company GfK. The growth was driven by strong demand for smartphones whose share in total sales increased by 3pps to nearly 60%.

South Korea's Samsung kept its leadership position, GfK said. Nokia ranked second.

In 2013 mobile phone sales in the country grew by 3% to nearly 2.8mn units.

There are 14mn active SIM cards in the country. The market saw the entry of more than 50 virtual mobile operators that started operating in 2013. The total number of clients of such operators is estimated at 600,000 to 700,000, accounting for a market share of nearly 5%, according to earlier media reports. A virtual mobile network operator is a mobile company that does not have its own spectrum or own network infrastructure but usually has business agreements with traditional mobile operators to use their networks.

Currently there are three traditional mobile operators active on the Czech market – 02 Czech Republic, owned by financial group PPF, and the local units of Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile and UK's Vodafone.
