Lambo, Aril reign in 2014 Independence Cup [Saudi Gazette, The]


(Saudi Gazette, The Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Cesar De Mesa RIYADH - Joel Lambo and Irene Aril bagged the Masters Event crown in the recently concluded 2014 Philippine Independence (Kalayaan) Cup, held at UBC here.

Both bowlers topped the master's elimination round and moved to the final round with "twice to beat" advantage.

Completing the men's division masters winners were Rudy Usudan - 1st runner-up, Reynald Medina - 2nd runner-up, James Frizzle - 3rd runner-up and Noel Marquez 4th runner-up.

In the ladies division, Haidee Urbano (1st runner-up) displayed her much improved game in beating veteran Juliet De Asis (2nd runner-up) in the first step ladder final game.

Urbano's streak was, however, cut by Aril in the second step ladder game.  Masters event champions were awarded round-trip tickets to Manila courtesy of Qatar Airways and Al-Tayyar Travel.

Team La Liga Filipina (Ronald Bautista, Joel Batolina, Edwin Atienza and Andro Tismo) grabbed the team event crown with Team Boracay (Frizzle, Ronald Cruz, Freddie Solomon and Alex Armada) finishing second. Barangay Ginebra (Ernee Noto, Joe Garrido, Stephen Solomon and Celis Viloria) came third, Kalayaan (Nelson De Vera, Ryan Inigo, Joel Lambo and Arnold Jesena) fourth and La Republica (Dennis Gabriel, Bembol Velasco, Marvin Arocena and Erwin Nacario) fifth. The tandem of Usudan and Nap Torres bagged the Doubles Event crown with Atienza and Tismo coming second and Gabriel and Velasco third.  Fernie Ballano took the Men's Singles Event title with Boy Mirando second, Glenn Mar Dela Cruz third, Steve Perez fourth and Lambo fifth.



Mirando won the All Events competition with Ballano and Velasco second and third, respectively. Aril's dominance in the ladies division was outstanding as she also bagged the Singles and All Events crown. Ian Choco was 1st runner-up in the ladies singles event with Lulu Quejada and Bella Sabico tied at second. Choco also took the second place in the ladies All Events with Ellen Bernabe third. Special awards for highest games (scratch and with handicap) were given to Boy Mirando and Nina De Vera.

The event was organized by the Unified Filipino Tenpin Bowlers of Riyadh (UFTBR) in collaboration with the Filipino Bowlers Group of Riyadh (FBGR).


Thirty-three teams participated in the four-man team tournament which was sponsored by Saudi Telecom Company (STC), Qatar Airways, Al-Tayyar Travel, Steakhouse and Piatto Restaurants (Alfa Company), Al-Marai, NADEC, Pepsi Saudi Arabia, City Flower Supermarket, FAWRI Money Transfer Services, The Good Ship Lollipop, Gandour, House of Donuts, Badghiesh Electronics, EG Collections, including individual donors - Rey Bautista, Art Yukong, Fathi Abdulaziz and Ric Ventura. Messrs. Tariq Al-Sulaiman of STC, Niyas Ellikal of Qatar Airways and Muhammed Rashidh of City Flower graced the closing and awarding ceremonies.

The heads of the organizing committee, Ernee Noto, Emerson Mitra and Cesar De Mesa thanked the sponsors, participants and members of the organizing and support committees for making the event a success.
