GFI Software contradicts claims of sacked individuals, says five not 12 jobs terminated [Malta Independent, The](Malta Independent, The Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) In a statement sent to this media house, GFI Software, one of Malta's top developers of quality IT solutions for small to mid-sized businesses, has claimed that it terminated the employment of five of its employees and not 12 as previously reported by a number of individuals who had been sacked. The Malta Independent had sought comments from the company before issuing the report but the company, which confirmed that a number of individuals were sacked, declined to comment further when asked to confirm the number of those asked to leave and the reason behind it. The story came about after a number of individuals contacted our newsroom and stated that only two weeks after having joined the company, they had been asked to leave, highlighting that the company must have known that a number of individuals would be facing the sack but still went ahead taking them on board. But in a letter sent by GFI states all employees whose jobs were terminated were handled in a professional manner and generous severance packages given to them. This contradicts reports made by those who were sacked since they said they were asked to leave in the most of unfair manners. The letter sent to this media house and signed by Josef Calleja, General Manager of GFI Malta, states: "As a privately held international software company, GFI Software operates within the dynamic IT industry. "Forming part of this fast-paced, highly competitive sphere means that sometimes hard decisions need to be taken to improve efficiencies, as part of the natural ebb and flow that businesses face. "Over the past few days, the company regretfully had to make three roles redundant as part of its endeavours to streamline operations. Coupled with this, the company also terminated the employment of two employees who were on probation. "All five terminations were handled in a professional manner and generous severance packages were provided. No software development/programming roles were affected. GFI Software did not immediately release this information out of respect for the individuals concerned." "GFI has invested in Malta for over a decade, in which time its workforce has tripled," Mr Calleja continued. Late last year, the company moved its 150 Malta employees to brand new, state-of-the-art premises in Mriehel. GFI's Malta office hired 28 new employees in the past 12 months and 50 employees in the past 24 months.
