ANSI Board of Directors Welcomes Dr. Willie May of NIST(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NEW YORK, May 29 -- The American National Standards Institute issued the following news release: Dr. Willie May, associate director for laboratory programs at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) addressed the Board of Directors of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) on May 22, 2014. In this role, Dr. May is responsible for oversight and direction of NIST's six laboratory programs, and is the principal deputy to the NIST director. Prior to his current position, he served as director of the Material Measurement Laboratory at NIST. He also led NIST's research and measurement service programs in chemistry-related areas for more than 20 years. When Dr. Patrick Gallagher steps down as NIST director later this summer [see related article] (http://www.ansi.org/news_publications/news_story.aspx?menuid=7&articleid=3874), Dr. May will serve as acting director of NIST. Over the course of his career at NIST, which has spanned more than forty years, Dr. May has been intimately involved in metrology, and has recognized the critical role of documentary standards. For example, Dr. May led the U.S.-Brazil-EU Tripartite Task Force that authored the "White Paper on Internationally Compatible Biofuels Standards" in 2007 [see related article] (http://www.ansi.org/news_publications/news_story.aspx?menuid=7&articleid=1728). In that capacity, he saw firsthand how standards impact trade, innovation, and competitiveness, and further recognized the value of strategic engagement in standardization activities, as well as the importance of consensus-based standards development. To that point, Dr. May said that more than 400 NIST staff participate directly in standards development work, both domestic and international. Many NIST staff also serve directly on ANSI policy committees and governance groups. "NIST looks to and counts on the ANSI community. Our partnership with you helps us to be effective in coordinating federal government engagements in standards and conformance through the ICSP (Interagency Committee on Standards Policy)," said Dr. May. "But there's much more we can do to make our relationship even stronger. I welcome any and all input and look forward to continuing to engage with this dynamic and driven community." Dr. May concluded by stating that the profile of and need for standards have increased dramatically in connection with issues of national priority. He cited smart grid, cybersecurity, health IT, cloud computing, and forensics as just a few of the areas that NIST has been addressing in recent years.
