DMTF Announces Adoption of Virtualization Management Specification by ISO and IEC

PORTLAND, Ore. --(Business Wire)--

DMTF, the organization bringing the IT industry together to collaborate on the development, validation and promotion of infrastructure management standards, today announced that its Virtualization Management (VMAN) Specification has been adopted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC (News - Alert)) as ISO/IEC 19099. This designation will accelerate worldwide adoption as the DMTF continues its ongoing work toward interoperable IT management standards.

VMAN is the third DMTF standard specific to cloud and virtualization management that has achieved ISO/IEC approval. The other two are the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) Specification and Web Services for Management (WS-MAN) Specification.

"Standards-based management solutions are increasingly valuable to IT infrastructures," said Jeff Hilland, DMTF president. "ISO and IEC accreditation provide additional credibility and availability of our standards to an international audience, further enabling effective management of IT environments worldwide."

Workgroups within the DMTF, based on the collaborative efforts of volunteers from industry-leading cmpanies, have identified and created a solution for the need to create a resource allocation model and a scalable management model for virtual resources, virtual systems and collections of virtual systems. DMTF's standard-based management models and methods enable more integrated and cost-effective management solutions.

The VMAN Specification is the third building block in the DMTF's approach to cloud and virtualization management. OVF provides for resource pooling (processors, memory, network and storage) while WS-MAN manages and monitors resource allocation and usage. VMAN completes the picture by offering lifecycle management of virtual machines (start, stop, pause and resume).
