Loras makes case for yet another national title [Telegraph-Herald (Dubuque, IA)](Telegraph-Herald (Dubuque, IA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Loras College might want to consider adding another wing to its sports management trophy case. Loras students won the College Sport Research Institute case study competition held in Columbia, S.C., for the third time in five years. The team included seniors Beau Schmitz, of Clive, Iowa; Griffin Weihe, of Coralville, Iowa; and Jared Reddy, of Pecatonica, Ill.; as well as juniors Nathaniel Smith, of Lincoln, Ill.; Sam Noble, of Oregon, Ill.; and Andrew Wampler, of Slater, Iowa. "Our success would not have been possible without the help of our professors and mentors," Schmitz said. "This experience will be one of the many great memories we have had over our four years. This team also has three returning members who I guarantee will only build upon the recognition Loras College has received through the sport management program. We are happy to bring a third championship back to Dubuque." Students wrote a 1,000 word paper and presented on a school, conference or larger subset of schools to describe and analyze the spending comparisons after reviewing the Knight Commission's Academic and Athletic Database for NCAA Division I. Loras' students focused on spending trends within the entire Football Bowl Subdivision versus the Football Championship Subdivision. "The men went with a high-risk, high-reward strategy," said Dr. Matt Garrett, who oversees the sports management program at Loras. "By using the entire database instead of one university they opened themselves to more scrutiny but through their effort and preparation they nailed the paper and presentation and won against a strong field. For our sport management program to win all three national competitions this year without almost three different rosters of students demonstrates the depth of the quality of the students in our program." Loras also won national titles at the Sport Management Association competition in October, and the Society for American Baseball Research competition in March. DON'T PITCH THAT OLD BASEBALL GEAR Paul Scherrman is in the process of packaging shipments of usable baseball equipment for the New York-based Roberto's Kids charity. To donate used equipment or uniforms, contact Scherrman during business hours at 563-744-3393. The manager of the Farley semi-pro baseball team is the Midwest Regional Program Coordinator for Roberto's Kids. The organization, named after Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, collects new and used baseball equipment and distributes it to disadvantaged children in Latin American countries. Ground transportation to New York has always been donated by Midwest Transport, LLC, of Farley, Iowa. LINN-MAR HIRES PRINTY AS HOOPS COACH Linn-Mar High School on Wednesday announced the hiring of Jaime Printy as the new girls basketball coach, pending board approval. She replaces Michael Brandt, who stepped down after spending the past 13 years as the Lions' head coach. Printy served as an assistant coach at Linn-Mar this season. Printy earned first-team all-state accolades as a player at Linn- Mar and was named Gatorade Player of the Year in 2009. She then earned four letters at the University of Iowa before graduating in 2013. Printy was the 2010 Big Ten Conference freshman of the year, a four-time all-Big Ten selection and a three-time academic all-Big Ten pick. West Lyon senior WINS IOWA MR. FOOTBALL AWARD Brandon Snyder, of Inwood West Lyon High School, has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 Ed Thomas Mr. Football Award presented by the Iowa Newspaper Association. Snyder was presented the award April 25 during an awards ceremony at the school. The Ed Thomas Mr. Football Award was created in 2010; it is presented annually, recognizing a high school football player who has demonstrated excellent performance on the football field and exemplary character in all aspects of life. The award memorializes long-time Aplington-Parkersburg teacher and football coach Ed Thomas, who was tragically killed in 2009.
