Telecommunications Regulatory Authority Oman host three day international conference on Internet-related issues [Times of Oman]
(Times of Oman Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Muscat: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA Oman) is hosting a three day meeting of the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Name (APTLD) members. The meeting kicked off on Sunday and will conclude on Tuesday.
A number of delegations from 14 countries, major international organisations and leading international corporate houses such as Google and Microsoft are discussing and debating a number of changing variables in the fast-growing world of Internet.
The meeting, organised by the APTLD organisation in cooperation with the TRA, will highlight a number of issues related to the Universal Acceptance of the Internationalised Domain Names (Internet domain names in characters other than the Latin characters) including opportunities and challenges.
The meeting will also focus on issues related to Internet governance and the recent announcement by the US to transfer Key Internet Domain Name Functions to the Internet community.
Mr. Don Hollander, the general manager of the APTLD organisation, highlighted the importance of this meeting, saying: "The Middle-East is an important and growing part of our community and the issues that we are talking about at the meeting, IDNs, are very relevant to the region.
"In addition, Oman is a ccTLD that has clearly been working over the past few years to beef up its skills and resources and seems ready to grow its capabilities."
Mohammed Al Kindi, Executive Manager, Regulatory and Compliance Unit in TRA Oman, highlighted the importance of attending such meetings to discuss and share global concerns.
"After getting our own country-code Top Level Domain (ccTLD), .om, a couple of years back, Oman will now have a good chance to access these countries' experiences to manage and utilise domain names in an optimal fashion. At the same time, we will present and showcase what we have achieved in this area." Al-Kindi said.
