Thus the university has truly emerged as the leading provider for higher education in the country with it serving the platform for molding innumerous bright professionals and entrepreneurs. Rajeev Suri, who graduated from Manipal in 1989, was appointed the chief executive of Nokia Corp in the beginning of this month. In February, Satya Nadella, another alumnus of the institute, was appointed the chief executive of US computer giant Microsoft Corp. Suri, a 46-year old electronics and telecom engineer, has headed Nokia's mobile network unit since 2009 and was widely expected to be named chief executive. He succeeds Risto Siilasmaa, Nokia's chairman who served as interim CEO of the company since last September, when Microsoft Corp announced its intention to buy Nokia's handset business. Indian-born Suri studied electronics and communication engineering at Manipal Institute which stands on a hillside close to the Arabian Sea in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. "We were looking forward to this announcement," said D Srikanth Rao, joint director of the institute. "We are proud that a student who graduated from here has achieved such a big position." Suri's professors remember him as a dedicated and talented student. "He was very ambitious and was always interested in doing something new," said Niranjan U.
