Senior anti-graft official investigated A senior anti-graft official has been probed for possible corruption, the top discipline watchdog announced on Friday. Wei Jian, director of the No 4 inspection and supervision office of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China, has been investigated for suspected "serious discipline and law violation", a term that generally refers to corruption, according to the watchdog's website.

Hunan 409 punished over electoral fraud A total of 409 former officials have been punished for electoral fraud in Hengyang, local authorities said on Friday. Of the remaining 57 of the 466 under criminal investigation, 39 have been handed over to judicial authorities and 18 are still being investigated, according to the website of Hunan discipline inspectorate. On Dec 28, the Hunan provincial legislature disqualified 56 members for buying votes and announced that more than 500 lawmakers in the city had been disqualified, dismissed or had resigned.


Disabled woman dies in village building A disabled woman, who is paralyzed from the waist down, died from a head injury five days after her husband dropped her off at an administration building in their home village. The husband had placed his wife at the administration building and had been asking the local government to pay his family a monthly subsidy of 111 yuan ($18.20) to care for his disabled wife, the Beijing News reported on Friday. The local government paid the family 46,000 yuan in compensation.

Xinjiang Five sentenced to prison for separatism Five people have been sentenced to prison in Urumqi for inciting separatism and endangering national security, Xinjiang Daily reported on Friday. Sentences ranged from seven to 15 years, according to the report. The five were convicted of using electronic devices to spread video and audio material to incite separatist activities, and illegally setting up preaching sites to spread religious extremism to children and youths, the report said.

Tianjin Beidou system makes breakthrough The Beidou navigation satellite system, developed in China, has achieved a major breakthrough in marine applications by achieving positional accuracy within a meter, authorities said on Friday. The Beidou Radio Beacon-Differential Beidou Navigation Satellite System passed an evaluation after more than 130 days of testing in Tianjin. The technology can be applied in sailing, marine exploration and rescue efforts.

Shanxi Over 1,000 ancient Buddha statues found Over 1,000 ancient Buddha statues have been discovered, a local cultural relics protection department said on Friday. The Buddha statues were found in three caves in a cliff in Yangqu county and could date back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), according to local archaeologists. The stone statues carved into the cave walls are 12 to 25 centimeters long, said Yang Jifu, director of the county's cultural heritage tourism bureau.

Hebei Man kills family, commits suicide A man killed a seven-member family on Friday morning in a village in Baoding and then committed suicide, Beijing News reported. The village committee said the father of the family, surnamed Pang, borrowed more than 100,000 yuan ($16,000) from the suspect several years ago and refused to pay off the debt on several occasions. An investigation is underway.

Hubei College intervention causes departures Most of the members of a popular student society at Wuhan University left the association after the university intervened in the selection of the society's chief. The resignation letter, signed by 45 members of the society, was posted online on May 5 as saying that the winner of the society's election wasn't among the six candidates. "Procedural justice was roughly violated," it said.

Guizhou Province aims to recruit more foreign experts The province plans to bring in 102 more foreign experts from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Israel to work on 63 unspecified projects, according to the provincial administration of foreign experts affairs. Guizhou is currently home to 239 foreign experts who hold certificates from the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, including 221 who specialize in culture and education and 18 in economics.

Fast track to greatly reduce travel times The high-speed rail line from Shanghai to Kunming, the country's longest east-west rail line, is expected to be completed by early 2016, cutting transit time for passengers from Guiyang, Guizhou province, to Kunming, Yunnan province, to just two hours, Guizhou City Daily reported on Friday. With completion of the segment connecting Guiyang to Changsha, Hunan province, scheduled for May 2015, a trip between Guiyang and Beijing or Shanghai will take seven hours.

Guangdong Drug abuse shrinks woman's bladder Drug abuse caused a 19-year-old woman's bladder to contract to one-tenth its original size in Zhuhai, doctors said. Over the past two years, the woman has been suffering from a condition that causes her to frequently urinate. After a health checkup, doctors found that her bladder's capacity was only 50 ml, one-tenth a normal bladder. The woman's abuse of ketamine over the past three years is tied to her condition, doctors said.

Con man jailed for credit card scam A con man was sentenced to 11 1/2 years in jail and fined 20,000 yuan ($3,200) on Thursday, the Guangzhou Daily reported on Friday.

The man, Hong Yanghao, disguised himself as a wealthy businessman and gained the trust of a local businesswoman, surnamed Zhu, in 2012. Hong first duplicated Zhu's identification card, then cloned her credit cards and withdrew a total of 5.96 million yuan using the fake cards in July 2012.

Zhejiang Local police catch gang of 54 burglars Police recently busted a gang of 54 burglars in Ningbo recently, zjol.com reported. Police said the gang has broken into apartments by climbing the pipes installed outside buildings and added that the gang once burglarized more than 10 apartments in one night. The highly organized gang shares the loot among each member and any money stolen is used for gambling and drugs.

Jiangsu Woman sues govt after stumble on road A 78-year-old Nanjing woman, surnamed Cao, sued the local municipal authorities recently for compensation after she stumbled on an uneven road, the Yangtze Evening News reported on Friday. Cao fractured bones in her left foot when she stumbled last year. She sued two government departments responsible for urban road management and asked for compensation of more than 66,000 yuan ($10,500) in court. The court has not yet delivered its verdict.

Chongqing Employees arrested after stealing gold Seven workers from an electronics company were arrested recently on allegations they stole gold from their employer, Chongqing Morning Post reported on Friday. The workers were accused of using chemical methods to steal about 8 kg of gold from the company's gold-plating solution. The plating process is part of the manufacture of electronic devices. The gold was said to be worth more than 2 million yuan ($320,000).
