Japan, Israel to bolster cybersecurity cooperation

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are expected to agree when they meet next week in Tokyo that their countries will bolster cooperation in countering attacks in cyberspace, a Japanese government source said Friday.

Japan and Israel, which has strength in the information and communication technologies sectors, have decided to reaffirm their ties on the issue at a time when more international cooperation is needed to deal with increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks, the source said.

The two countries aim to hold working-level government talks and eventually share relevant information on technologies to fight cyberattacks, which target and cripple state institutions as well as financial and electric power companies.

Abe and Netanyahu, who is visiting Japan from Sunday, are also expected in their talks Monday afternoon to agree to hold a security dialogue at their level, and increase exchanges between their defense officials, the source said.

The two leaders are also expected to discuss the peace process in the Middle East.

Japan has held working-level talks respectively with the United States, Britain and India from 2012 to last year to discuss ways to deter cyberattacks.

Israel, for its part, is known for its drive to enhance its ability to combat cybersecurity attacks by training people with such expertise.
