NetZero Wireless Expands NetZero DataShield WiFi Security Service to Android Devices

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

NetZero Wireless, Inc., a subsidiary of United Online, Inc. (NASDAQ: UNTD), today announced that it has expanded its NetZero DataShield™ WiFi (News - Alert) security service to include Android™ devices. NetZero DataShield, which launched for PCs, Mac® computers, iPhone® phones and iPad® tablets in July of 2013, encrypts and protects users' data when they connect to the Internet via any WiFi connection, including public WiFi hubs.

There are four plans available:

  • 1-month subscription - $6.95
  • 3-month subscription - $16.95
  • 6-month subscription - $27.95
  • 12-month subscription - $49.95

Consumers can buy a NetZero DataShield subscription by calling 1-800-NETZERO or by visiting the NetZero Website, www.netzero.com. After signing up for their plan, consumers who will use the service to protect their PC or Mac laptop can download the software in moments directly from the NetZero Website. Mobile users can get the software through either Apple iTunes (for iPhone and iPad products) or Google Play (for Android (News - Alert) phones and Android tablets). Up to three devices may be protected per subscription.

NetZero DataShield utilizes an array of secure servers located all over the world. When a subscriber signs on to a public WiFi hub and activates the service, NetZero DataShield connects to one of these servers and forms an encrypted tunnel through which all of that subscriber's data is transmitted. NetZero DataShield protects not only Web surfing, but aso other common activities including instant messaging, video streaming, VoIP, and email with industry-standard 128-bit encryption, the same technology used by banks and credit card companies.

In addition to encrypting subscriber's data, NetZero DataShield also hides a subscriber's physical location by replacing the subscriber's IP address with a NetZero DataShield temporary IP address.

"Being able to log onto the Internet from a coffee shop, hotel or other public WiFi hub is convenient, but unfortunately, even if these networks are password protected, they still aren't secure," said Rusty Taragan, President of NetZero. "Using them can put your private information, including credit card numbers, and anything else you transmit while connected to them, at risk. NetZero DataShield encrypts your online activity including your emails and keeps that activity completely private. When you use NetZero DataShield, you can take advantage of the convenience of public WiFi networks and be confident that your personal information is secure."

The number of WiFi hotspots is exploding and millions of Americans log onto public WiFi networks in coffee shops, hotels, airports, subway stations and other locations. While these connections are convenient, and often free of charge, most are not private or secure. This includes password protected and even paid WiFi. Not all information transmitted over these networks is encrypted and can be seen by hackers, identity thieves and others also connected to the same WiFi network using easy to find software and a computer. Passwords, credit card numbers, bank account information, private messages and other sensitive data can be exposed and stolen. But not when the user connects to a WiFi network with NetZero DataShield installed and activated on a laptop, tablet, smartphone, or other mobile device.
