Zimbabwean tycoon to launch African innovation award [Agence de Presse Africaine]


(Agence de Presse Africaine Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Zimbabwean telecommunications magnate Strive Masiyiwa has announced plans to set up an annual award to recognize Africans who create ground-breaking technologies and successfully register patents.Writing on his Facebook page on Friday, Zimbabwe's richest man said the annual prize would encourage innovators and inventors from Africa.



He said he would be setting up an independent panel that would write the rules for the award and publish them on a special website to be linked to his Facebook page.

“Once it is up and running, you will be able to participate for cash prizes. The prizes will go to both business entrepreneurs, as well as social entrepreneurs,” said Masiyiwa who founded cellular phone company Econet Wireless Group that operates in several African countries.


He said there would be a special category for those who successfully register new patent and a special book prize for an African who writes the most interesting book that would be published in e-book format.

“On Monday, I will also announce the long awaited award for teachers in Africa. It's time to remember all those teachers on whose shoulders we all stand,” Masiyiwa said.
