Consumers look at non-typical products at Gitex Shopper Spring 2014 [Gulf News (United Arab Emirates)]

(Gulf News (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dubai: While most buyers are looking for smartphones and tablets at Gitex Shopper Spring edition 2013, some are setting their sights on non-traditional products including home appliances such as coffee makers, juicers, and other products like "breakless" pencils, battery-charged toy cars and watches.

The four-day consumer electronics show kicked off on Wednesday at the Dubai World Trade Centre. TVs, smartphones, tablets and laptops are the biggest product categories at the exhibition.

Scores of visitors were at Clear-Coat, which offers covers and screen protectors made of polyurethane for different devices, such as smartphones, tablets and cameras.

"[The covers] are designed, cut and packaged from the US," said Anup SK, the company's business coordinator. He pointed out that shoppers come to his stand after buying a device to get it covered.

Covering a smartphone costs around Dh100, while applying a screen protector on a camera costs around Dh60.

"We made more than Dh20,000 [in sales] on the first day [of Gitex]," SK said, adding that he expects to generate "Dh100,000" by the end of the exhibition.

At a nearby stand, Nestle is displaying a wide range of coffee makers. The company sold 58 machines on the first day of Gitex Shopper, according to Intissar Dennaoui, field operations executive at Nestle. By the end of the show, the company expects to generate Dh500,000 in sales, she said.

Coming to Gitex Shopper for the first time is KY Style and Home Malaysia, which is selling massagers, popcorn makers and steam irons, among others. Bosco Ooi, the company's manager, said he is looking for wholesalers at the show.

Meanwhile, visitors at City Moments can find a wide range of watches from brands such as Casio and Swiss Military, which are priced between Dh100 and Dh2,000. The company expects to generate " between Dh500,000 and Dh750,000 in sales," said Sajesh Chalil, City Moments' marketing manager.
