Teachers receive training on internet abuses [Ghana News Agency](Ghana News Agency Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Tamale, April 23, GNA - The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED), a gender-sensitive non-governmental organisation (NGO) is training teachers drawn from 17 districts of the Northern Region on the abuse of internet services by children. The training would enable the teachers to serve as a mitigating measure to prevent pupils from abusing internet facilities, which has negative consequences for their development. Mr Charles Tia, Operations Manager of CAMFED-Ghana said in Tamale on Wednesday at three-day training for the teachers that there are so many risks associated with children using the internet without being monitored. He said there is the tendency for children to engage in internet fraud popularly referred to as sakawa or being influenced to indulge in other negative activities such as watching pornographic materials. Mr Tia said such practices affect the moral, physical and psychological development of children and urged teachers and parents to monitor their wards. He explained that all the teachers were selected from CAMFED partner schools and the knowledge gained is expected to transform the ICT skills of those schools expeditiously. Mr Samuel Lartey, ICT Manager of CAMFED-Ghana explained that the NGO had developed a training tool with topics such as basic ICT knowledge, internet forever, digital footprint, online privacy and many more to equip the teachers adequately to be able to make the desired impact on children. He observed that the curriculum of the Ghana Education Service do not have any mechanism to prevent children from visiting websites, and described the situation as unfortunate.
