Heat, Panthers arenas boost cellular service [Sun Sentinel :: ](South Florida Sun Sentinel (FL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 18--Just in time for the playoffs, Heat fans will find it easier to send their selfies and connect with friends and social media via a newly installed Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at AmericanAirlines Arena. The system consists of more than 320 strategically-placed antennas that distribute wireless coverage throughout heavily-trafficked areas. Connected cellular carriers include AT&T Wireless, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint. "This allows our patrons to instantly share their in-venue experiences via their mobile devices by sharing calls, videos, texts and photos ensuring a superb cellular wireless experience," said Tony Coba, the Heat's chief information officer. The system has also been installed at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, though the immediate benefit will be for the concert crowd with the Florida Panthers not in the playoffs. The additional capacity and coverage at the AmericanAirlines Arena optimizes call reliability and enables more consistent, reliable and faster data network access to its customers. Verizon Wireless has installed advanced in-building 4G LTE wireless systems in both arenas. The systems also designed to be effective when a building's construction or structural characteristics, common in large sports arenas, make it difficult for a cellular signal to penetrate walls and connect with the outside wireless network. "South Florida sports fans are active with their smartphones and tablets, from posting courtside selfies and calling friends to watching highlights of their favorite players," said Mariano Legaz, Florida region president of Verizon Wireless.
