Under Dr. Rugo's Leadership, 'Giants of Cancer Care' Continues to Grow

PLAINSBORO, N.J. --(Business Wire)--

Dr. Hope Rugo serves as a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she is the Director of Breast Oncology and Clinical Trials Education, and is the principal investigator for multiple clinical trials. She is also an active member of the national cooperative group, ALLIANCE, and is among the founding members of the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium.

Additionally, she is serving another important role in advancing cancer care - Dr. Rugo is the Advisory Panel Chair for the Giants of Cancer Care program, presented by OncLive, where she oversees a panel of 28 other esteemed oncologists and researchers who are beginning the process of selecting the 2014 class of Giants. The Giants of Cancer Care initiative recognizes and celebrates individuals who have achieved landmark success within the field of oncology.

Dr. Rugo graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and went on to complete both her residency and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at UCSF. Dr. Rugo furthered her professional education with a post-doctoral fellowship in immunology at Stanford University, and later joined the faculty at UCSF full-time. Currently, her principle clinical trial work focuses on combining novel targeted therapeutics with standard treatment to improve the treatment of both early- and late-stage breast cancers.

The newly-expanded Giants of Cancer Care Advisory Panel dentifies annual award categories, refines the selection criteria, and guides the nomination and selection processes for the program. Nominations for the 2014 class closed on April 15, and the Advisory Panel will begin reviewing nominees and selecting the newest class of Giants. These activities are led by Dr. Rugo and the 28-member Advisory Panel.

"The Giants of Cancer Care program owes much of its success to the leadership and vision of Dr. Rugo and our esteemed advisory panel," said Joe Petroziello, Vice President of Clinical Affairs for OncLive. "Her clinical insights and dedication to expanding the Giants program across disciplines and institutions is paramount to our continued growth."

The 2013 class of Giants included honorees from Yale, Harvard, Johns Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic. The 2014 Giants of Cancer Care program winners will be announced in May 2014 and recognized in OncologyLive and OncLive.com.
