Bonga points firm Onfon in names service deal [Business Daily (Kenya)]

(Business Daily (Kenya) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mobile service provider Safaricom has entered into a new partnership with a Nairobi-based IT firm Onfon Media after it scuttled its Bonga points-for-cash trade.

Safaricom had claimed the platform was established without its approval and deactivated its code last year, but Onfon is back with a service where people can find out what their names mean.

The old platform had reportedly handled more than 10,000 orders in the four hours it was active before shutdown.

Under the new revenue-sharing deal, Onfon said it has developed a platform for interpreting names whenever a subscriber makes a call through the Safaricom network.

Onfon Media chief executive officer Dennis Makori told the Business Daily on Monday: "This is a 50-50 per cent revenue sharing and so far we have 53,000 subscribers in the service. The duration of the contract between us and Safaricom is open-ended and the response so far is very encouraging.'' The platform will be rolled out to other networks next week. Among the networks targeted are Airtel and yuMobile.

He said the partnership with Airtel is targeting all its subscribers in the 71 countries where it operates.

"We did research in the market first and we have so far over 100,000 names whose meaning have been voiced and uploaded to the Safaricom Skiza tune,'' Mr Makori said on Monday.

The service costs 75 cents. Mr Makori said the meanings of the names are available in English language, Kiswahili and local dialects.
