HP lines up GITEX show stoppers [ITP.net (United Arab Emirates)]

(ITP.net (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) HP Middle East today announced its fresh product portfolio in preparation for GITEX Shopper Spring 2014, including a phablet, a convertible Windows 8 touch screen laptop and a number of printers that introduce native mobile printing.

The 6-inch diagonal HP Slate 6 VoiceTab is being billed as a "Voice Tablet". While its screen size places it in the phablet category, HP was keen to stress the tablet-like aspects of the 3G device.

Front-firing stereo speakers for enhanced sound and an IPS Panel for wide viewing angles are two such features. The device also comes with an HD camera front and rear for photos and video chats and a micro SD card slot allows up to 32GB of storage. Users also have access to HP Connected Photo, which enables them to sync photos across various devices through the cloud.

But the device weighs just 160 grams, and is slim enough to fit in pocket, albeit a generously sized one, a feature that helps force the handset into the mid-range phablet category.

"Customers have told us they want a single device that is designed to work and play the way they do, at an affordable price," said Mathew Thomas, general manager, Printing and Personal Systems, HP Middle East.

"In our commitment to provide best in class, products and services, we are launching exciting products that meet our customer's needs." HP Slate6 VoiceTab will be available exclusively at Sharaf DG in the UAE by the end of this month for a starting price of AED 1,099.

The unit supports printing and multipage scan, automatic two-sided printing, copy and fax. HP claims it has also tweaked the device and its consumables to "print up to two times the pages for the same cost... without compromising on performance.

The model also prints from smartphones, tablets or notebooks through AirPrint, a system that enables wireless and mobile printing from any Apple iOS device via a Wi-Fi network as well as e-print, allowing users to print from "virtually anywhere".

HP Deskjet Ink Advantage Printer 4645 is available in retail stores now at AED 455.

HP's new hybrid flagship is the Pavilion x360, which takes its name from the method by which the device changes form factors. As a notebook the screen flips back and then keeps on flipping until the keyboard and screen are back to back to form a tablet, passing through "stand" and "tent" mode along the way. When in tablet mode the keyboard is completely disabled owing to the act that it rests on the hand that holds it. On inspection of the device ITP.net found the hinge that supports the transition to be extremely robust, but at 1.4kg it is a little heavier than, for example, the Asus Taichi at 1.25kg.

The HP Pavilion x360 is available in retail stores by the end of this month for a starting price of AED 1,799.
