MTN offers subscribers alternative power solution [Sun, The (Nigeria)]


(Sun, The (Nigeria) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) BY OLABISI OLALEYE Following the outcome of a research that close to 90 per cent of Nigerians do not have access to power, MTN has partnered with some foreign firms to provide affordable alternative to electricity supply called 'Mobile Electricity Solution'.



The companies are Nova Lumos BV and Schneider Electric. The mobile electricity solution is an MTN SIM-enabled solar-based system that will enable Nigerians enjoy about 70watts of electricity.

According to the telecoms firm, the energy generated is sufficient to power several household items including fan, radio set, Laptop computer, bulbs, TV set and handset chargers.


At the signing ceremony, the Senior Manager, Business Development, Marketing and Strategy of MTN Nigeria, Mr. Henry Okoede, explained that the initiative was fuelled by the company's passion to make life better for its teeming subscribers.

"The MTN vision of a bold new digital world is all about the positive impact of MTN mobile telephony and technology in the daily lives of our customers. It is about reducing exclusion and social disparities. We officially announce a partnership with Nova Lumos and the GSMA to deliver mobile electricity to MTN subscribers' homes that have limited electricity or live off the national electricity grid," he said.

Okoede maintained that the partnership was in line with the company's strategy of pursuing collaborative models with partners whose vision are aligned with its goals of fostering social economic development in Nigeria.

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Nova Lumos, Davidi Vortman, stressed that his company was determined to assist Nigeria in making people in the rural areas have access to affordable electricity.

He stated: "The goal of the innovation is to provide uninterrupted power supply in Nigerian homes, especially those that are unconnected to the national electricity grid. And we foresee a resourceful partnership in MTN as a leading and innovative ICT company to achieve this objective." The event commenced the three-pronged inclusion strategy, which will see MTN launch affordable health insurance service that will provide low-cost medical insurance to its subscribers as well as financial service products with a partner bank to address the financial inclusion needs of subscribers in the second quarter of 2014.
