Australia : Government to restart broadband subsidy under $34 million program [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The federal government will restart a broadband subsidy plan for 9000 homes and businesses to access faster internet under a total $34 million program, after they were locked out of the interim satellite services established under the national broadband network.

The government also verified that it would buy additional capacity on satellites owned by SingTel-Optus to enhance the performance of its satellite services available to existing clients, after complaints that internet speeds had slowed to a trickle due to congestion on the satellites.

The $351 million interim satellite service is a temporary placeholder formed by NBN Co while it builds two of its own satellites planned for launch next year. The two long-term satellites will ultimately offe4 250,000 regional and rural homes, businesses and schools with faster internet service.

However, the temporary service, initially capped at 48,000 users, has faced significant congestion as users took up the service significantly faster than first estimated. The company has since stopped accepting orders for the interim service, and reduced the number of people on the satellites to 44,000.

The eligibility requirements will be scrutinised very carefully this will be for people who genuinely have no access to any alternative method of broadband and this will be a subsidy toward the costs of their dish that will enable them to get access to an interim satellite service,  he said.

It would spend a total $34 million to expand capacity on the satellites, and subsidise extra services.
