Translation site hints at upcoming WhatsApp call features [T-break Tech (Middle East)]

(T-break Tech (Middle East) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WhatsApp has already mentioned that the super popular messaging service will be getting voice calling features later this year but it hasn’t revealed much on how the calls functionality will work. However, the official WhatsApp Translation site has listed call related terms that need to be translated giving us a bit of an insight on what to expect. The following terms are what we found in the Arabic, iPhone section hinting the iPhone could possibly be the first device to get such features: Incoming Calls Missed call from %@ Call back %@ calling %@… %@ needs to update the app to receive WhatsApp calls.

%@ is unable to receive WhatsApp calls at this time.

Your device cannot be used to make calls through a mobile carrier.

This call will be placed through your mobile carrier. Carrier charges may apply. Do you want to continue? The last two terms are of particular interest. The first one suggests that WhatsApp might facilitate telcos/carries that don’t allow VoIP features such as FaceTime or BBM Voice that are currently blocked in the UAE. The last term tells us that in such scenarios, WhatsApp might calls to go through your carrier instead. This could also work in situations when you don’t have access to data.

While we still don’t have a time frame on when WhatsApp will release the updated app with voice features other than later this year, the translations suggest that work is going at full speed and thus it won’t be surprising to see it sooner rather than later.
