Grim state of affairs despite minister's order [Pretoria News (South Africa)](Pretoria News (South Africa) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) I recently made a trip to the Home Affairs office in Akasia where I normally go as the office seems to be well managed. What an ugly surprise awaited me with long queues of elderly people waiting to get the new smart ID card. The offices were crammed with people, many standing and with no air conditioning. Luckily, minister Naledi Pandor graced the offices on the same day. Within minutes of her arrival, the five empty terminals were magically manned. I took the opportunity to point out to Minister Pandor that it would be terrible if an elderly person was to collapse due to the unbearable heat in the offices. Some said they waited for the entire day in lines of up to 90 people. What a disappointment when two weeks later I went to fetch my passports, only to find the same conditions in the Home Affairs offices. No ventilation, long queues, but at least the lights were on again! Minister Pandor, the lines of elderly people waiting for ID smart cards remains unbearably long in unbearable heat.
