Ashanti,B/A education colleges receive computers [Ghana News Agency](Ghana News Agency Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Kumasi, March 14, GNA The Government on Friday presented 1,300 laptop computers to 13 colleges of education - both public and private, in Ashanti and Brong- Ahafo, at a ceremony in Kumasi. Dr Musheibu Mohammed Alfa, Deputy Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, who did the presentation, said all the colleges across the country would be covered in this drive to equip these schools with computers. He said everything must be done to ensure that teachers were assisted to keep pace with the radical transformation of the classroom in an environment driven by technology. The goal is to promote the development of a technologically empowered teaching force so that ICT is embedded in teaching and learning in our schools right from the basic level. He said the expectation was that the teachers would be more comfortable with computers, use it to prepare their lesson notes and carry out better research on their subjects. Dr Alfa said the ICT Project spearheaded by his ministry was a clear demonstration of the states determination to promote computer literacy through improved access to ICT facilities. So far, about 40,000 laptops had been distributed to over 800 senior high schools, technical and vocational institutions nationwide. He said for the colleges of education, the scholarship would serve as an incentive to attract science teachers. Mr Eric Opoku, the Ashanti Regional Minister, in an address read on his behalf, urged the College Principals to make sure that the computers were used for research work. He urged the students to visit websites which would provide information and materials needed to upgrade their knowledge and skills. Mr Joseph Eshun Famiyeh, the Principal of Wesley College of Education, underlined the importance of the re-training of the teaching staff in ICT skills and said that was the path to achieving the goals of the project.
