Engineers honor Moultrie native W.J. Williams [The Moultrie Observer, Ga. :: ](Moultrie Observer (GA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) March 14--MOULTRIE -- On Feb. 7, the son of a prominent Colquitt County educator was honored for his work as an engineer. Willie J. "W.J." Williams Jr., a native of Moultrie, was recognized with the Modern-Day Technology Leader Award at the 28th Annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) STEM Global Competitiveness Conference. The conference is hosted by the US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine, the Council ofEngineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Lockheed Martin Corporation. Williams' father, the late Willie J. Williams, was principal of Colquitt County Junior High School -- which is now a mddle school that bears his name. His mother is Louvenia Williams, former teacher in the Moultrie school district. The BEYA conference recognizes successful modern-day black inventors, technical innovators, gifted scientists, budding engineers, and high-level managers and executives whose careers are "Going Beyond the Limits" in private industry, government agencies, and the military, according to a press release about the award. The conference provides employers with the unique opportunity to acknowledge and share the achievements of African Americans who are leaders in the fields of math, science, engineering, and information technology and have overcome a landscape of personal challenge, social inequity, and workplace immobility, the press release said. Williams stated that he was "extremely excited and humbled to receive this award and to be amongst an esteemed group oftechnical professionals who are blazing pathways every day in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math." He is a graduate of Clemson University, where he received his bachelor's degree in computer science, and he holds a master's degree from Boston University in computer information systems. Currently residing in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, Williams is a senior lead software engineer for BAE Systems, a leading defense, security, and aerospace company and supplier to the U.S. Department of Defense. He was also recently profiled and recognized by his company during National Engineers Week for his accomplishments.
