Rangel to Highlight Women in Tech

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NEW YORK, March 14 -- Rep. Charles B. Rangel, D-N.Y. (13th CD), issued the following news release: As part of his ongoing effort to foster an environment for innovation and entrepreneurialism in the District, Congressman Charles B. Rangel is gathering local tech enthusiasts on March 20, 2014, at Silicon Harlem's "Tech Talk event with Charlie and His Friends," hosted by its executive producers Bruce Lincoln and Clayton Banks at MIST Harlem on 46 W 116th Street. It will feature Andrea L. Taylor, Director of Microsoft's Citizenship and Public Affairs, North America, to honor Women in Technology in celebration of Women's History Month.

"I'm looking forward to bring together people who are actively engaged in the community's exciting, fast growing technology sector and can help transform Harlem into the next Silicon Valley in America," said Rangel. "This is especially a great opportunity for women who are interested in technology to get inspired and motivated to get in the game." Rangel's special guest, Andrea L. Taylor, has set the strategy for Microsoft's work in the US and Canada for a wide range of nonprofit organizations, governments and industry partners to administer Microsoft's Corporate Social Responsibility program to strengthen communities. Today, the primary focus of Microsoft's community investment is YouthSpark, a global initiative to create opportunities for 300 million youth around the world over three years. YouthSpark empowers youth to imagine and realize their full potential, connecting them with opportunities for education, employment and entrepreneurship to help them create real impact for a better tomorrow, largely through STEM programs. Andrea's previous experience in philanthropy and education includes work with the Cleveland and Ford foundations, and the Education Development Center and Harvard Graduate School of Education. She's currently a trustee of her alma mater, Boston University, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and New York Public Radio.

Rangel recognizes the value of technology and has long been a supporter of several tech incubators in his District. To encourage STEM education among youths in the District, Rangel kicked-off The first-ever House Student App Challenge to execute his vision to transform New York's 13th Congressional District into a technology hub. Last November Rangel invited Samsung's Executive Vice President David Eun to discuss Harlem's bright tech future; later in December, Rangel received Square CEO and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey to a conversation with small business owners in Harlem.
