State officials have estimated it will cost about $6.6 million for repairs. The state is providing $4.9 million, or 75 percent of the cost. March 2, 2004: Retired businessman and civic and Baptist leader Russell Emmett Davenport Sr. of Fayetteville dies at his home. Davenport moved to Fayetteville in 1945 as manager of Sycamore Dairy. From 1975 until his retirement in 1988, he was the owner and president of the company. The company closed in November 1989. March 4, 2004: Cottonade residents ask the Fayetteville City Council Development Committee to withdraw the neighborhood's request to replace the Cottonade Lake dam. The city was discussing whether to pay for the new dam and bill nearby property owners. The project requires a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which will cost about $1 million, and the new dam estimated construction cost is $500,000. 25 Years Ago March 2, 1989: Carolina Telephone announces a construction plan this week that calls for spending more than $119 million in eastern North Carolina during 1989, including spending $288,800 this year in Fayetteville to install seven miles of fiber-optic cable that will connect offices inside the city. March 2, 1989: Susan E. Pulsipher has been named director of library services at Methodist College. March 6, 1989: The Fayetteville City Council votes unanimously to award a contract for widening Cain Road to five lanes. The project, which includes widening the road from Bragg Boulevard to U.S. 401 Bypass and installing proper storm drainage and a sidewalk on the east side, is part of the 1986 bond issue for sidewalk and road improvements. The council approved $991,000 for the project. 35 Years Ago March 4, 1979: Knowles Supermarket at 1802 Sapona Road is sold to Bobby and Tommy Kinlaw, who will operate the store as Kinlaw's Super Market. March 4, 1979: Crenshaw Hardy, general sales manager of the Pepsi-7-Up Bottling Co. of Fayetteville, is promoted to the general manager of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. of Durham. 50 Years Ago March 2, 1964: A 15-gun salute greets Lt. Gen. John W. Bowen as he officially takes command of Fort Bragg and the 18th Airborne Corps. March 2, 1964: Cumberland County Commissioners approve salary raises of $25 a month for all officers with the Sheriff's Department. The increase begins this month. March 3, 1964: The dental offices of Fort Bragg celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the Army Dental Corps with a dinner and a dance at the Officers' Open Mess.
