Contest puts le Tour in bit of a spin [Newcastle Evening Chronicle (England)]

(Newcastle Evening Chronicle (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Newcastle's Cycle Hub's "Tour de CENSORED" art competition advert to celebrate the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in Yorkshire VIVE la difference - organisers of the Tour de France have gone into a spin over a Tyneside cycle group.

Now, Newcastle's Cycle Hub is staging an artistic protest after being told it cannot celebrate the Tour de France with a poster design contest.

The Ouseburn-based business had called on folkto make posters to mark this year's Grand Depart, which takes place in Yorkshire, with the best being featured at its Late Shows events in May.

But after being told it cannot use the words Tour de France, Grand Depart or Le Tour, the competition is now calling for art looking at the issues of cycling and censorship.

"Originally the idea was to celebrate the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire for the first time, with the cycle HUB and Saddle Skedaddle teaming up with Muro Buro to curate a design competition which would form part of the Late Shows on May 16 and 17," said organiser Andrew Straw.

"But what was a simple idea to promote cycling in the UK has now had to become the 'Tour de CENSORED.' "It's like the Olympics - you couldn't show the rings without paying someone a lot of money - and we've been advised we can't use these words," said Andrew.

Andrew Denton, for Yorkshire's Grand Depart 2014, defended their position.

He said: "Ever since we secured the Tour de France for Yorkshire we have been proactive in educating businesses and communities around the restrictions relating to the brand of Le Tour.

"We do not want to see anyone getting into trouble around use of the logo or use of the trade marked words and we have tried to help in this instance with our business dos and don'ts.

"The Tour is the world's largest free sporting event, which means the event is part funded by companies on the continent spending millions of euros to access the brand of the Tour de France.

"The owners of the Tour rightly protect the interests of their sponsors by protecting the logo and the words." To enter the competition, designs from abstract art to commercial graphic design, in any medium, as long as it can be printed to A2 portrait size.

One winner will receive a signed Muro Buro print and Cycle HUB/ Skedaddle goodie bag.

Entries, including name, age and contact details, should be emailed to [email protected].
