Multi-Tech Customer Aclara Wins Connected World Gold Award

(PR Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) February 25, 2014 Multi-Tech Systems announces that its customer, Aclara Technologies LLC, has won Connected World Magazine’s highest honor, a Gold Award, for implementation of Multi-Tech machine-to-machine (M2M) technology in its STAR® Network system. The Connected World Awards are given at bronze, silver, and gold levels to honor companies that have successfully leveraged, with quantifiable results, M2M connectivity to solve critical problems.

Aclara’s STAR Network implementation was nominated in the Utilities category. The STAR Network consists of three components: Meter Transmission Units (MTUs), Data Collector Units (DCUs) and the Network Control Computer (NCC). Multi-Tech’s SocketModem technology was used in the DCUs to transmit meter readings to the Network Control Computer headend software application for analysis. The technology allows Aclara to reduce the time it takes to implement cellular backhaul and also reduces costs to its customers.

The SocketModem® iCell intelligent cellular modems are industry certified, carrier approved, ready-to-integrate communications devices that offer 2G and 3G, GSM and CDMA performance with a common pin out and software interfaces. These quick-to-market communications devices allow developers to add wireless communication and GPS tracking to products with a minimum of development time and expense.

As all SocketModems have a common footprint, Aclara can switch from Verizon CMDA to AT&T 3G by simply swaping out SocketModem modules. This flexibility allows Aclara to quickly and easily respond to its customers’ changing network needs. Because Multi-Tech’s solution is pre-certified with leading cellular providers, such as Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, there is no need for Aclara to recertify each new device.

In the past, Aclara was faced with delays of three to four months per carrier and additional cost because the company had to perform a separate development and certification effort for every cellular provider each time the cellular technology changed.

“Implementing M2M technology through Multi-Tech eliminates the delay in adopting the latest cellular technologies, allowing us to upgrade our cellular-based products faster,” said Cynthia Daugherty, product manager, STAR Network. “M2M technology allows us to meet our customer requirements effectively and at a lower cost than with previous technologies.” “We are proud that our SocketModem technology has become an important part of the STAR Network and that we are a trusted supplier to Aclara. We congratulate Aclara for their Gold award at the Connected World show,” said Duane Wald, vice president of sales, Multi-Tech Systems.
