[February 24, 2014] CHP to appeal laws on Internet and HSYK [Cihan News Agency (Turkey)] Tweet (Cihan News Agency (Turkey) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ISTANBUL (CIHAN)- Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) parliamentary group deputy chairman Akif Hamzaçebi said at a press conference on Monday that his party plans to appeal recent controversial legislation at the Constitutional Court. Two laws will be appealed: the Internet law, which was recently signed by President Abdullah Gül, and, in the event of it also being approved, the law on the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK), which is still awaiting the Turkish president's signature. Hamzaçebi explained that the CHP's previous appeal of the HSYK law, which is claimed to be ushering in executive control over the judiciary by restructuring a top judicial body, was rejected by the Constitutional Court because it has not been approved by the president and has not yet been published in the Official Gazette. With regard to the ongoing corruption investigation involving Cabinet ministers, Hamzaçebi said that the government trying to play the victim amid the allegations of corruption. "Some of the bills introducing restrictions -- which were drafted after the Dec. 17 [police operation as part of a corruption and bribery investigation] -- have been signed into law, and others are waiting in line.
