Chemring Technology Solutions Joins World's First Centre for 5G Research

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Chemring Technology Solutions has become a research partner with the University of Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC), which will spearhead international research into 5G technologies for the next generation of mobile networks.

Chemring Technology Solutions joins a research consortium of some of the world's most notable mobile technology organisations including Aeroflex, AIRCOM International, BBC, BT, EE, Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe, Huawei, Ofcom, Rohde & Schwarz, Samsung, Telefonica and Vodafone.

5GIC is the world's first centre for research into standards and solutions for 5G, which will underpin the future of mobile technology, and has received more than 50million1 to conduct research into the development of advanced technologies for a 5G network of the future. Together, 150 researchers from partner organisations, and 100 PhD students will establish a world-leading position in mobile broadband communications and internet innovations.

Chemring Technology Solutions' first project will be to develop new technologies based upon its SmartSwitch solution - the world's first true policy-on-the-device app that provides enhanced subscriber engagement and connection management capability - and the University of Surrey's phone location and context technology.

Professor Rahim Tafazolli, Head of the University of Surrey's Centre for Communication Systems Research and 5GIC, said: "Our vision is to provide a mobile communications service that creates the perception of 'infinite capacity' for the end user. Heavy-weight partners, such as Chemring Technology Solutions, will help us to make this vision a reality by actively shaping future 5G technologies that will drive economic growth." Peter Lockhart, Future Technology Manager at Chemring Technology Solutions, said: "We have led the way in mobile technology and standards development for more than 50 years and are excited about working with the 5GIC team. By making 5G technologies a reality, this team can take the UK to the forefront of global future telecoms technology development." Chemring Technology Solutions will be sharing a speaking platform with Professor Rahim Tafazolli at this year's Mobile World Congress - at the '5G and NGN - air interfaces, HetNets and network topologies' seminar on Monday 24 February, 2014. There will also be a live demonstration of SmartSwitch.

[1] The consortium partners have pledged time, expertise and other contributions which together total more than 30 million. This will be added to the 11.6m that was awarded by the Higher Education Funding Council of England (HEFCE) under the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF) in autumn 2012.
