SkyCross Introduces World's First 4X4 MIMO Solution for Smartphones Achieving New LTE-A Speed Record of Almost 600Mbps

SAN JOSE, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

SkyCross, a global innovator of RF solutions for mobile devices, today announced a new line of LTE (News - Alert) antennas that achieve data rates approaching 600Mbps, more than 3X faster than the throughput of today's LTE mobile networks and devices. This first of its kind breakthrough sets new throughput records while employing commercially-available products and technology.

Previously thought of as unachievable, SkyCross's (News - Alert) Dual iMAT technology allows four or more antennas to compactly fit into a smartphone form factor, while maintaining sufficient isolation to enable 4X4 MIMO (multiple input multiple output). The classic technique of separating antennas spatially (i.e., putting distance between antennas) has prohibited this given the limited size of mobile handsets.

"SkyCross has developed a unique antenna solution for 4X4 MIMO that both solves the spatial issue of fitting numerous antennas into a small form factor with sufficient isolation, but also drastically improves data rates and overall performance," said Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, Chief Technology Officer at Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert). Deutsche Telekom announced it has employed SkyCross's Dual iMAT 4X4 MIMO products in its latest field testing with very positive results.

Last Friday, Deutsche Telekom released the results of the field test in the German market highlighting their findings:

  • Achieved 580Mbps peak speed and ultimate cell edge performance with the ew antenna technology on a live LTE network environment.
  • Revealed the first commercially-viable 4X4 smartphone antenna from SkyCross, showcasing the antenna's robustness in orientation, indoor/outdoor usage, line of sight or non-line of sight usage, or proximity to tower.
  • Demonstrated the capability to combine LTE-A 4X4 MIMO and carrier aggregation to deliver the best-in-class user experience in most spectrally efficient way.

"Field testing by Deutsche Telekom and SkyCross validates that 4X4 MIMO implementation is possible in a handset form factor, without sacrificing MIMO effectiveness," said Joe Madden, principal analyst for Mobile Experts. "This new approach by SkyCross takes antenna modeling and design to a new level. It's not just bent metal anymore. With extremely advanced modeling, SkyCross appears to have a way to solve the multi-dimensional challenge of small size, multi-band MIMO antennas."

SkyCross's Dual iMAT technology achieves this performance breakthrough through a combination of 4X4 MIMO and dual band carrier aggregation. Whether for a single band of LTE, two bands of LTE with carrier aggregation, or even recently announced 3-band carrier aggregation, 4X4 MIMO can significantly enhance performance by almost 2X.

"SkyCross has delivered the world's first 4X4 MIMO solution for LTE," said John Marshall (News - Alert), Chief Marketing Officer of SkyCross. "In solving the isolation challenge of 4X4 MIMO, SkyCross's Dual iMAT technology delivers unprecedented data rates, greater coverage, increased reliability and lower costs, all while improving spectral efficiency and allowing operators to maximize the performance on their infrastructure."

Benefits to consumers and industry partners include:

Mobile operators: New revenue-generating services based on the capability of streaming at data rates up to 580Mbps, not to mention improved network capacity and fewer dropped calls.

Handset manufacturers: New handsets with service differentiation given that they significantly outperform competitive products.

Consumers: Faster data and streaming video, with better range - anywhere, not just close range to towers or near WiFi hotspots.

With early analyst forecasts in the range of 300 million incremental 4X4 MIMO-enabled mobile devices in the next five years, 4X4 MIMO could contribute well over $1 billion to the ecosystem in infrastructure, mobile devices and services. SkyCross is exploring partnership opportunities with operators and leading technology companies, and is making available its 4X4 MIMO development kit in support.
