Neil Heatherly replaces Mike Garfield as Tennova CEO [The Knoxville News-Sentinel, Tenn. :: ]

(Knoxville News-Sentinel (TN) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 14--Community Health Systems has named Knoxville native Neil Heatherly as the new CEO of Tennova Healthcare.

Heatherly will replace Mike Garfield, who has announced his resignation after more than two years leading the six hospital system.

The announcement comes just weeks after Franklin-based Community Health finalized a deal to acquire Tennova Healthcare's parent company Health Management Associates.

"I'm excited to join the team of highly qualified healthcare professionals at Tennova," Heatherly said in a news release. "The system has all the right ingredients for success -- locations throughout our community, advanced technology, and a dedicated team of physicians and employees. Combined with new resources made possible through affiliation with CHS, we'll be able to further enhance the quality care already being provided to the Knoxville community." Heatherly has nearly 20 years of hospital management experience, joining Community Health in 2009 as vice president for operations for hospitals in Tennessee and Pennsylvania.

He was later appointed president of the home care division, where he oversaw the operations of 80 affiliated home health agencies.

Prior to joining Community Health, Heatherly was CEO of StoneCrest Medical Center in Smyrna, Tenn., where he oversaw the construction of a new hospital.

"Neil has a strong track record of positioning hospitals for success," Community Health Board of Trustees Chairman Douglas Leahy said in the news release. "His deep knowledge of hospital operations, combined with his familiarity with Knoxville, will support Tennova's continued growth and work to provide our community with quality health care choices." Heatherly, a graduate of Farragut High School, holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee and a master's of Business Administration from Vanderbilt University.

He is the son of longtime hospital executive and Covenant Health board member Wayne Heatherly, who retired as president and chief administrative officer of Parkwest Medical Center in 2006.
