Future Facilities NA: Dr. Jonathan Koomey to Present at Teladata's Technology Convergence Conference [Professional Services Close - Up]

(Professional Services Close - Up Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Future Facilities North America (Future Facilities NA), a provider of data center design and operational management software, announced that Dr. Jonathan Koomey, Research Fellow at the Steyer- Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance at Stanford University will be presenting at Teladata's Technology Convergence Conference on February 18, in Santa Clara.

According to a release, many data centers focus on improving infrastructure efficiency, measured by PUE (Power Utilization Effectiveness), but a single focus on that metric will often yield perverse results, such as low equipment utilization, stranded capacity and wasted capital. Instead, Dr. Koomey argues that data center operators should focus on the cost per computation and the total revenues from computation, detailed analysis of efficiency improvements in both computing and infrastructure, as well as sensible application of computer simulation tools to understand how changes in information technology deployment will affect the utilization of data center infrastructure over time.

During his discussion, Why Energy Efficient Data Centers are Not Always the Most Profitable Data Centers, Dr. Koomey will provide a business-focused view of data center efficiency, grounded in key performance indicators. At the end of the day, it's sound business decisions that should matter to data center owners, not improvements in imperfect efficiency metrics like PUE.

"A single-minded approach to data center operations can be detrimental to the life and profitability of the data center," said Dr. Jonathan Koomey, Research Fellow at the Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance at Stanford University, "My discussion will explore a more holistic, business-focused view of data center efficiency and the performance indicators that should be most important to the companies that own and operate data centers." Dr. Koomey is an international expert on the economics of green technology in a variety of fields, including the effects of information technology on resource use, and the energy use and economics of data centers.
