Growth in Mobile Data Traffic and Limited Spectrum Availability Drive the Global HetNets Market, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

(PR Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) San Jose, California (PRWEB) February 10, 2014 Follow us on LinkedIn – With the prolific increase in penetration of user devices such as smartphones, tablets, and other connected devices, mobile data traffic is witnessing exponential growth, thus creating a dire need for faster and efficient networks. The conventional homogenous network architecture is not viable for handling this deluge of signal and data traffic. The search for alternative cost-effective and efficient approaches led to the conceptualization of the Heterogeneous Networks or ‘HetNets’. HetNets employ a heterogeneous architecture with small cells of several sizes, including microcells, picocells, and femtocells; other low power nodes such as relay nodes, Wi-Fi access points, Distributed Antenna Systems (DASs), and remote radio heads/units (RRHs/RRUs); Cloud RAN; and Wi-Fi within a densified macrocellular overlay.

HetNets enable operators to extract maximum value from available spectrum, hide the complexity of the multi-layer, multi-radio, multi-vendor and multi-operator mobile network; attain economies realized from deployment of lower-cost low power nodes ( LPNs); support a range of new services, including M2M and Femtozone services, to boost revenue growth; and meet subscriber Quality of Service (QoS) expectations. Through LPN installation HetNets are becoming both an enabler and a benefactor of the Green radio trend. Global rollout of LTE and LTE-Advanced infrastructure is also a major factor fuelling adoption of HetNets.

Though HetNets represents an emerging phenomenon, several Tier I and Tier II operators across the globe have already begun actively deploying small cell base stations, Distributed Antenna Systems (DASs), Radio Remote Heads (RRHs), relays and other LPNs, and Cloud RAN systems to fill gaps in network coverage and improve user experience in in-building, indoor and cell edge environments. However, small cell deployment poses a host of challenges to carriers, particularly interference management small cell backhauling, and small cell gateway security. Carriers, other service providers, and equipment vendors are developing new business models to monetize the HetNets and small cells architecture.

Following a slowdown in recent years, global shipments and deployment of femtocells, the smallest type of small cell base station, gained momentum in 2013. Among the two main form factors, standalone femtocells dominate shipments volumes. The focus of carriers and femtocell vendors is transitioning from the residential consumer segment to the lucrative enterprise femtocell market. Though picocells and metrocells arrived recently on the scene, shipments are expected to rise rapidly, driven by increasing use of small cells in outdoor and indoor public access environments. Multimode small cells are expected to make up a significant part of overall small cells sales through the turn of the decade, assisting operators in smoothly transitioning network infrastructure and subscribers from 3G to 4G/LTE cellular systems.

Private and carrier-grade Wi-Fi access points (APs) are being increasingly deployed through the HetNets approach to offload data from macrocell base stations in high-traffic density hotspots. Wi-Fi integrated small cells devices are also expected to emerge as a game changer in the global HetNets market in the near term. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is expected to figure prominently in the backhaul approach of mobile network operators who are striving to sustain high QoE levels even amid rising wireless data traffic rates. The significant CAPEX/OPEX savings and energy savings that Self Organizing Networks (SON) software delivers during deployment of new RAN infrastructure, is attracting considerable interest and investment from carriers across the world.
