Taqua's Virtual Mobile Core Transparently Extends Carrier Voice & Messaging Network Coverage with WiFi

RICHARDSON, Texas --(Business Wire)--

Taqua (News - Alert)®, LLC, a leading supplier of mobile and fixed core networking IP convergence systems and applications, today announced general availability of its Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) Virtual Mobile Core that enables fully integrated and transparent cellular to WiFi (News - Alert) voice and messaging services on mobile devices.

Taqua's Virtual Mobile Core VoWiFi solution enables carriers to offer voice and messaging services over WiFi networks, while keeping the experience exactly the same as if it was a cellular call. Depending upon signal strength, the phone chooses between WiFi and cellular signal and uses the strongest signal for incoming and outgoing calls and messaging. This allows carriers to fully utilize WiFi spectrum resources, reduce cellular spectrum load, improve device battery life, and expand and enhance network coverage. After extensive testing, the Taqua VoWiFi solution is available across a variety of smartphones and tablets from leading mobile device manufacturers, and the integrated solution has already been chosen for deployment by a tier one carrier.

"Taqua's Virtual Mobile Core allows carriers to leverage residential and enterprise WiFi Access Points, along with their own WiFi networks, in a seamless and transparent manner," said John Hoadey, Wireless CTO at Taqua. "Embedded VoWiFi is one of a series of solutions available from Taqua's Virtual Mobile Core that are designed to solve interworking challenges between 3G, small cell, WiFi, and 4G/LTE (News - Alert) networks."

Unlike Over-the-Top (OTT) applications that require a separate user interface - and often a different subscriber identity - Taqua's solution enables cellular and WiFi calls from a single phone interface and the subscriber's existing phone number. The Taqua solution uses the phone's native dialer, contacts, call history and voice mail, as well as the native SMS, using the same message notifications, inbox and outbox. Subscribers will not notice the difference between calls made over WiFi or cellular.

"VoWiFi is emerging as an attractive solution to delivering an exceptional user experience as mobile operators wrestle with the challenges of deploying 4G/VoLTE services while fending off OTT voice providers," said Berge Ayvazian (News - Alert), 4G Industry Analyst for UBM Tech. "Offering seamless, advanced mobile voice services that eliminate most coverage challenges would be a considerable competitive advantage in today's marketplace. Embedded VoWiFi could also be extremely beneficial to new carriers and MVNOs as it offers the potential for a range of new business models."

Taqua will showcase its Virtual Mobile Core's VoWiFi solution at this year's Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) at Hall 1, Booth 1F22 from February 24th - 27th.
