Council of Public Relations Firms Opens 2nd Annual Video Contest

NEW YORK --(Business Wire)--

The Council of Public Relations Firms (Council), the industry's trade association, announced today the launch of its second annual video contest for U.S. college students: "Take Flight with PR."

The Council seeks the video that most persuasively and creatively responds to the following prompt:

"What is your dream PR assignment? Tell us in a short video of no longer than three minutes. You may, for example, decide to showcase an important social cause, or a favorite restaurant, a brand or musical band. Be creative… and tell us how you would make your story take flight!"

Contestants will choose an interest, idea or passion, showing in their videos how they would communicate this story, to a specific or broad target audience. The contest is aimed at showcasing the multitude of careers possible at public relations firms, including career paths in brand marketing, public advocacy, content creation, video production, design, and more.

The Council will judge submissions based on creativity, storytelling and meaningfulness in relation to the contest's prompt.

The contest will run from February 5 - June 16. The finalists will be selected ia crowd sourced voting on the contest web site, with the top 10 vote getters, plus two "critic's choices", advancing to the final round. During the summer, a blue ribbon panel of PR industry leaders, including: Tim Bird, President & COO, Cooney/Waters Group; Rob Bratskeir, GM/New York, Executive Vice President, 360 Public Relations; Kate Cronin, Managing Director, Ogilvy (News - Alert) Public Relations; Nelson Fernandez, Managing Director, New York, APCO Worldwide; Rob Flaherty, CEO, Ketchum; Jim Joseph, President, North America, Cohn & Wolfe (News - Alert); Ralph Katz, Co-Founder, Principal, CooperKatz & Co.; Alan Sexton, New York Market Leader, GM, Burson-Marsteller, Gary Sheffer, VP, Corporate Communications, General Electric; Stephanie Smirnov, Managing Director, Consumer Marketing, Edelman (News - Alert) and Helayne Spivak, Managing Director of the Brandcenter at Virginia Commonwealth University, will view and judge these top 12 videos, and select the ultimate winner.

The winner will receive a $2,500 cash prize, an expense paid trip to New York City for the winning video's premiere at the Council's October 23rd member dinner; one-on-one meetings with three Council member firms while in New York, and online visibility on prfirms.org.

The winning video in the 2013 contest was "Oust the Earmuffs, (http://prtakeflight.com/entry/2936024)" a fully animated short created by Ashley Varner a senior at the School of William and Mary. Varner's video addressed the need for marketers to cut through the clutter, distinguish themselves in the marketplace, and engage in order to effectively reach consumers.

"The student videos submitted in the contest's first year were very good examples of storytelling, something PR professionals do every day," said Kathy Cripps, President of the Council of Public Relations Firms. "Public Relations is a dynamic career, and this contest is a great vehicle for aspiring practitioners to demonstrate their communications chops, as well as their prowess with new technologies."
