BRIEF: Webcams give people a peek at St. Louis Zoo's penguins, puffins [St. Louis Post-Dispatch :: ]

(St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 30--ST. LOUIS --Now you can see the St. Louis Zoo's penguins without even leaving the house.

Since the zoo's penguin exhibit is closed to the public during construction of the zoo's new $18 million Polar Bear Point exhibit, webcams have been installed to connect people to the penguins and puffins online on weekdays.

The webcams will show live footage from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Prerecorded bird footage will air the rest of the time. The cameras also will be used by zoo staff to monitor the birds' behavior.

Construction of Polar Bear Point started in September. The new exhibit is supposed to be finished next year.

The birds -- gentoo, rockhopper and king penguins, plus horned and tufted puffins -- may still be seen through $50-per-person behind-the-scenes tours reserved in advance.
