East Africa Data Centre to host KIXP [CommsMEA (United Arab Emirates)]

(CommsMEA (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Telecommunications Service Providers Association of Kenya (TESPOK) has selected Nairobi-based East Africa Data Centre to host Kenya Internet Exchange Point (KIXP).

KIXP, the largest internet exchange point in East Africa, enables Kenyan ISPs to exchange traffic within the country without having to use multiple international hops. It frees international links from congestion, speeds up data and reduces costs and delays.

The East Africa Data Centre, which is owned by Mauritius-based Liquid Telecom, has 500 sq m of white space – a factor that helped it beat seven rival proposals to win the tender.

After more than 10 years at its previous site, KIXP required additional data centre space to support its aim of becoming the regional Internet exchange point for East Africa.

Fiona Asonga, CEO of TESPOK, said: "This is an important strategic decision for the Kenyan telecom market as we herald a new future for Interconnection in Kenya and the region as a whole. We are extremely happy with our choice of The East Africa Data Centre. It has an excellent reputation for quality, reliability and service".

The East Africa Data Centre opened in Nairobi in September 2013. It is the largest data centre facility in East Africa offering carrier-neutral, secure and reliable space for dedicated services including hosting, interconnect services, co-location and disaster recovery and cloud applications.

Customers present in the building include banks, mobile network operators, ISPs and cloud solutions providers.

Dan Kwach, GM at The East Africa Data Centre, said: "By keeping African data within the continent we are all helping to build Africa's digital future".

The East Africa Data Centre and TESPOK started working together to migrate ISPs and their infrastructure to the new location in December 2013. The process is expected to be complete on February 14.
