Rembrandt Patent Innovations Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Apple Inc.

BALA CYNWYD, Pa. --(Business Wire)--

Rembrandt IP Management, LLC (Rembrandt) affiliates Rembrandt Patent Innovations, LLC and Rembrandt Secure Computing, LP have filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple (News - Alert) Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The Patent-in-suit (US Patent 6,185,678) covers systems and methods for secure booting and recovery in an electronic device, which Apple uses in many of its products, including the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, without permission.

The Patent's four inventors are renowned in the field of computer security and in the national security community: William Arbaugh, an Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland, David Farber, an Adjunct Professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), formerly the Distinguished Career Professor of Computer Science and Public Policy at the CMU School of Computer Science, Angelos Keromytis, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University, and Jonathan Smith, Professor of Computer and Information Science and Pompa Professor of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania.

At the tim of invention, Farber and Smith were professors at the University of Pennsylvania, and Arbaugh and Keromytis were PhD candidates studying under them. Additionally, Arbaugh was working as a Senior Technical Advisor at the National Security Agency (News - Alert) in the Office of Advanced Network Technology. Farber was a Member of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee, was Chief Technologist of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC (News - Alert)) and is one of thirteen recent pioneer inductees of the Internet Hall of Fame. He is a Fellow of both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE (News - Alert)) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Keromytis was recognized as a Distinguished Scientist by the ACM. Smith is a Fellow of the IEEE and received the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service. The four inventors will each share in the litigation proceeds.

"Rembrandt is committed to helping patent owners obtain fair value for their inventions," said Dr. Paul Schneck, Rembrandt's Chairman. "Without companies like ours, many inventors would be without recourse when large companies have taken their inventions without permission and they need to litigate to enforce their rights. Rembrandt provides the necessary expertise and capital to level the playing field between inventors and well-funded infringers."

Rembrandt Patent Innovations, LLC and Rembrandt Secure Computing, LP are represented in this matter by Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP.
