Ikanos Extends Broadband Residential Gateway Leadership With a New Family of High-Performance Gateway Processors

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) LAS VEGAS, NV -- (Marketwired) -- 01/06/14 -- CES 2014 -- Ikanos Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: IKAN), a leading provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, today introduced the Fusiv® Vx500 suite of high-performance gateway processors, optimized to meet carrier requirements for next-generation smart residential gateways. The Vx58x vectoring xDSL gateway processors set a new performance bar, reaching aggregate (combined upstream and downstream) data rates of up to 400Mbps with VDSL2 bonding, while providing 11GHz of offload processing for cloud access, dual-band, dual-concurrent WiFi acceleration (AC1750), LAN management and QoS, and secure content processing and distribution. In addition, the processors accelerate the company's industry-leading diagnostics and monitoring software suite, inSIGHT™ Broadband eXperience Manager (BXM), ensuring quick resolution of wiring impairments and noise interference.

The Vx57x multi-mode gateway processors combine the same high-performance Fusiv® architecture with the flexibility to support any WAN access technology. This enables equipment manufacturers to leverage a common hardware and software platform to support different access technologies, such as fiber, LTE (up to Category 7), Ethernet, and hybrid fiber-copper, including G.fast. In addition to the Fusiv® offload engines, the architecture is designed with a high-performance SMP dual-core CPU subsystem, packing up to 1.2GHz of processing power per core for carrier and OEM customization and differentiation.

Furthermore, the commonality of the underlying Fusiv® architecture and core DSL technology with Ikanos' existing Vx18x/Vx17x processor family facilitates customer time-to-market. This is made possible through the complete re-use of existing software, which has already been tested and successfully deployed on various carrier networks.

"There is a disruption happening inside the home in how consumers generate, interact with, and consume various types of content, and the new generation of residential gateways is emerging as a key enabling component for the service providers in this new paradigm," said Teresa Mastrangelo, principal analyst, Broadbandtrends. "While the tremendous opportunity created by this disruption is attracting many technology and equipment suppliers, Ikanos seems to be well positioned for this transition, given its existing gateway footprint, DSL performance leadership, unique differentiators, such as inSIGHT™, and its common architecture approach to multi-access gateways." "Ikanos is committed to remaining one of the world's top suppliers of high-performance gateway processors," said Omid Tahernia, president and CEO of Ikanos. "The Vx58x family extends our xDSL gateway performance leadership for access over hybrid fiber-copper networks, enabling carriers to deliver multiple services with fiber-like performance over their existing copper infrastructure. With the introduction of the Vx57x multi-mode gateway processor family, we are extending the benefits of our advanced Fusiv® acceleration processor architecture to non-DSL access networks. This enables equipment manufacturers to build a common platform for addressing multiple service provider opportunities, whether the access is through FTTN with VDSL2, FTTdp with G.fast, FTTH, LTE, Ethernet, or cable." Key Features Up to 1.2GHz dual-core CPU subsystem with SMP for carrier and OEM application customization Fusiv® acceleration processing subsystem with 11GHz of combined offload performance Up to 400Mbps (aggregate upstream and downstream) bonded VDSL2 performance with vectoring support (Vx58x only) 300MHz dedicated DSP for carrier-grade voice processing Single-line and bonded DSL engine with inSIGHT acceleration (Vx58x only) Dual-band, dual-concurrent (DBDC) WiFi acceleration (AC1750) USB 3.0 offload for high-performance LTE support up to Category 7 NAS offload engine for local storage and cloud access Further differentiating the Fusiv® Vx58x processors from others in the market is a powerful software-based on-chip diagnostics product called inSIGHT™ BXM. First introduced in Ikanos' Fusiv® Vx185 family of gateway processors, inSIGHT™ is the industry's first in-home broadband diagnostic and monitoring solution integrated into a DSL gateway processor. inSIGHT™ leverages the advanced diagnostic features of the chipset, including temperature and voltage sensors, along with Ikanos' patent-pending algorithms, to enable carriers to proactively identify the cause of common wiring faults and noise interference, while enabling consumers to resolve basic problems locally. For service providers, inSIGHT™ lowers operational costs by eliminating many "truck rolls," speeding problem resolution, slashing downtime, and reducing churn by improving the subscriber's quality of experience.

AvailabilityThe Fusiv® Vx500 processor family is sampling in the first quarter of 2014, with production expected in the second quarter.
